Description

One of the hardest things for parents to do is talk to their child about death. Many adults are uncomfortable thinking or talking about death. With good intentions, parents want to protect their children from pain. Yet death is a part of life that children do need to know about. Many parents try to convince themselves that children do not know what is happening when someone is critically ill or dying. Children overhear things and often know much more than we think they know. Many times the adults are overwhelmed with responsibilities and do not feel they can provide adequately for the children. The best way to help children deal with death is to provide information and comfort for the level of their development.  Reading a children’s book about death with them can also be an opportunity for increasing their understanding and furthering dialogue on the subject.

This series of books deal with loss and the absence of family, friends and pets, including death, divorce and extended period of absence. The loss of someone close through death is a traumatic and painful event for the majority of people. For many children and young people the death of a parent, sibling, friend or relative can be extremely difficult because of the child’s inability to understand and articulate their feelings.
